Our Volunteer Opportunities:
The Forensic Panel offers several internships, available to talented and committed students from a range of disciplines. Interns work alongside and interact with professional staff at The Forensic Panel, and are trained and closely supervised to develop their professional and academic aptitudes;

•Selected Depravity Standard Interns will gain valuable experience in reviewing case materials from a range of actual homicide, sexual assault, assault, and/or non-violent convictions, and actively participate in ongoing forensic science research. The project refines students’ aptitude for case review, evidence searching, working with standardized definitions, the limits of interpretability, and offers the opportunity to participate hands-on in influential justice research. Interns critically review pre-trial criminal case records (i.e., police investigative reports, crime scene photos, witness statements, and autopsy reports) to identify the presence or absence of intent, action, attitude, and victimology aspects of depravity.

•Research Interns work across a number of current projects, assisting the Research Director and staff in article development for publication in academic peer-reviewed journals and law review publications. Students will further develop their skills in researching forensic topics across psychiatry, psychology, toxicology, medicine, emergency medicine, and/ or pathology fields. The varying tasks will refine skills in performing literature reviews and summaries, data analysis in SPSS and Excel, and assistance preparing manuscripts for submission.

•Case Internship candidates are selected from research and depravity interns who have excelled during their initial internship. Those selected have demonstrated a capacity for deadline-driven work, ethical behavior of the highest regard, and critical analysis of sensitive issues.

•The Forensic Panel also works in collaboration with its internship program partners to connect suitable candidates to additional internship opportunities after successful conclusion of the Forensic Panel internship. Partners include: the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office, and Beth Israel Medical Center.
